Welcome to Volendam, my home. More than just a fishing village and the ‘Palingsound’, this historic town is located on the Markermeer, formerly known as the Zuiderzee. Volendam is surrounded by brightly coloured wooden houses, old fishing boats in the harbour and the smell of freshly caught fish from local fishermen.

From Hotel Spaander, you can walk or cycle along De Dijk, sample the catch of the day, enjoy a cup of coffee and immerse yourself in Volendam's authentic atmosphere.

‘I miss eating fresh fish, especially the smoked eel was my favourite. It's lovely to sit on the Dike and walk around Het Doolhof...’

Edam

Edam was granted the right to build its own port in 1357 and grew into a prosperous trading village in the 17th century. You can admire the town's rich history in its authentic centre and the Edam Museum.

Modern tip: Visit the old traditional cheese warehouse with its own bakery, Bakhuis De Koophandel, and taste this delicious delicacy for yourself! Edam is a short distance from Hotel Spaander and can be easily reached by bicycle, car or bus.

Surrounding Volendam

Spend an afternoon at De Leek, a beautiful spot between Monnickendam and Broek in Waterland in Overleek. Hire a whisper boat, cycle through nature and take a break at Overleek Tea Garden for a delicious cup of coffee and homemade apple pie.

Zaanse Schans

Less than a 30-minute drive from Hotel Spaander is the Zaanse Schans, a place definitely worth a visit. Admire the historic windmills along the Zaan, stroll through picturesque streets and explore the many museums.
