Leendert's tips for Volendam and Surroundings
Hotel Spaander is ideally situated between hotspots for both business and leisure. The hotel can be easily reached by public transport and by car. Fancy a day out? How convenient! Tourist hotspots such as the Markemeer lake, Edam, Zaanse Schans, and Amsterdam are only a stone's throw away. Simply put: the ideal accommodation in heaps of history.
The town I called home is full of history and is situated at the Markermeer Lake, once called the Suydersea. Volendam is lined with bright colourful wooden houses, old fishing boats in its harbour and freshly caught seafood from the local fishermen. From Hotel Spaander you can bike or walk along De Dijk, taste the catch of the day, drink coffee and soak in the authentic history of everything Volendam has to offer.
"I miss eating fresh fish, the smoked eel was my favourite, on the Dijk and walking around Het Doolhof".
You won’t be without things to do here in Volendam and you can always return to Hotel Spaander with a drink on the terrace or taking in the breath-taking views on your very own balcony.
"Not only did I attend the French school in Edam, but I also helped fishermen and farmers build shacks on the bank of the lake Ijsselmeer."
Edam was allowed to build it’s own harbour in 1357 and was once a very well-known trading village in the 17th Century. You can admire the rich history everywhere in the authentic Edam village and also in the Edam museum.
A modern day tip: Explore the old traditional cheese warehouse with their very own in house bakery, Bakhuis de Koophandel and of course try this delicious delicacy for yourself!
Edam is with easy reach of Hotel Spaander and can be visited by bike along the Dijk, car or bus.
Zaanse Schans is under 30 minutes driving from the hotel and worth every minute. Discover the world of windmills along the River Zaan, experience the ‘antiquity’ village streets and dive into Zaanse Schans museums.
Chocolate lover? Then you cannot skip the Verkade Factory. Right in the middle of Zaanse Museum is the Verkade Experience, also known as Verkade Paviljoen. Experience the original machines at work from the early 20th Century inside the factory. Delicious right?! Remember to bring us some back!
Whatever you call it, Amsterdam is a truly unique and beautiful city that offers old heritage beautiful architecture, long winding and twisting canals and boasts some of the best retail therapy.
Once your day is complete our terrace will be waiting for you to put your feet up and take in the evening sunset over the Markermeer lake.
Regrettably, Hotel Spaander does not allow pets.
If a room is booked for an unaccompanied teenager under the age of 18 years old, a permission letter is required by the parent or legal guardian, along with copy of identification of said parent or legal guardian, including a signature and contact information. We also recommend informing us ahead of time at email@example.com.
Hotel Spaander is a 100% non-smoking hotel. It is strictly forbidden to smoke anywhere within the hotel facilities, including the inner courtyard or outside your hotel room window. A fine of EUR 250 will be charged if we suspect or find our guests tampering with fire and safety equipment or if found smoking anywhere inside the hotel. The use of recreational drugs is also not permitted.
As we are located in an historic buidling since 1881, our hotel is unfortunately not very well equipped to accommodate the disabled. Our hotel is set up with 2 lifts and we do have on each floor washrooms equipped with grip bars. We strongly recommend our disabled guests to inform us of their requirements and restrictions prior to their arrival so that we can accommodate them accordingly in our spacious Retro rooms.
